teaching the youth

I’m sitting here at the beauty parlor waiting to get my hair cut and I just had a conversation with a precocious young man interested in my drawings. I told him that if he wants to be a good artist he has to practice and take his sketchbook everywhere. We talked about what kind of things I can draw and what materials I use to get what effects. When his family was ready to leave he had to go but made a point of asking me for my card and establishing a point of contact. He couldn’t have been much more than 8 years old.

What makes this interaction most interesting is that it came on the heels of a meeting i had with a teacher friend of mine in which he was giving me tips for how to best get my capoeira students to learn, tips that can be applied to teaching just about anything. He and I talked about creating lesson plans and how to select the elements that allow kids to retain those lessons.

I hope the boy I just talked to does contact me. I have never taught art to children before and i would love to have an interested child to practice with.
