Colorado Black Arts Festival Day 1

African Americans have made some crucial contributions to art and culture. The Colorado Black Arts Festival is proof. Live African drum and bass, blues, gospel, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, soul and world beat music fills the air. Multiple mediums, from fiber to photography, are displayed by notable and up and coming African American artists. Might want to have an appetite when you come, it’ll be tough to walk past the food court without stopping.

Vote for me – Small Business Grant

Hi everyone,

I’ve been taking a break from blogging for a while. I am far more visual than I am wordy, so at times, I just focus on the images. There are some new ones I want to share with you, but first, I have something to tell you about. I recently applied for a small business grant.

FedEx is offering to award $25,000 to the small business with the most votes. With that kind of money, I could create some great new products for you guys. I have some ideas for my Women Behaving Badly series that would help women and girls everywhere learn more about their place in history. So many women have contributed to the building of this country and our way of life. We should know who they are.

To that end, I want to print posters, informative postcards, collectible card decks (like baseball cards with stats and all), basically beautiful educational tools. Ideally, some would be for sale while others will be distributed to school aged kids. I want to inspire our young people, especially our young girls to enter high power, high paying fields like STEM, politics, business… fields in which the feminine touch is in short supply.

I am asking for your help. Please vote for me so that I can make my plans a reality.

UPDATE: The ballots have been cast and unfortunately, I have not been chosen this time around. Thank you to everyone who took time to vote (and help me troubleshoot my buttons). I will let you all know about any future opportunities that arise.

International Holiday Market

The Cause

This Thursday the Spring Cafe is hosting it’s first annual International Holiday Market. The mission of the Spring Cafe is to support immigrants and train refugees to work among us. Many people come to this country and work in factories because of language barriers. They work among other individuals who also don’t speak English which makes it almost impossible to learn.

Spring Cafe recognizes this and employs refugees for six week training courses. They learn about customer service in the US, get to practice their English and learn other job skills that add to their resumes. Spring Cafe gets these folks out of the factories and into the American workforce.

How Afro Triangle fits in

Some of you may not know this about me, but I am actually an immigrant. I was born in Barbados and was naturalized as a citizen in 1999. I came over with my mom and we had the help of my grandmother and aunts as we got used to living in the US.  The folks at the Spring Cafe were kind enough to include me in their holiday market. I get to join the ranks of those whose journey to this country was far more difficult than my own.

In addition to the market, there will be a live auction, a silent auction, and food and drinks available by donation. The proceeds will go toward helping the Spring Cafe continue their mission. I will be donating one of my paintings to the cause.

Dicitonary.com’s word of the year is xenophobia, the fear of the foreigner. Don’t let that be this year’s legacy. Come, participate, donate. Show our new friends that this country was built on inclusion. Come and support them as they learn how to contribute to our country and our economy.

I will be donating this piece to the auction at the Spring Cafe this Thursday. If you want it, come get it.

Mini Comic Con 12/3/2016

I am not strictly a comic book artist, but I have been a fan forever. I definitely used comic style in my art from time to time and it remains an inspiration to me. Whenever I am stuck or in need of inspiration, I seek out my comic collection. I have been fortunate enough to have been invited to this year’s Mini Comic Con.

A Little Information

Comic cons are big business these days. These once fringe subculture events, have entered the mainstream and have become the premiere venues to celebrate pop culture. The growing popularity of comic cons can be partly attributed to the recent elevation of all things geeky in pop culture. But also by expanding comic cons to include not only comics, but also science fiction, fantasy, games, television, movies, animation, and all sorts of fandoms, comic cons have become celebrations of all things pop culture.

Whatever fandom you are into, we hope you’ll join us on Saturday, December 3, at Mini Comic Con at the Sam Gary Branch Library from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is a free event for fans of all ages.

Polish up your Wolverine claws, put on that cardboard TARDIS you made for Halloween, or show off that movie-quality Star Wars storm trooper outfit you spent a million dollars on. Whatever your fandom is we want to see it. Or, if you’re not into cosplay, just come as you are. There will be lots of stuff going on.

My inks will feature heavily at this event. If you are a fan of popular culture, come by and check it out.

Holiday Gift Market

In the words of the folks at My Hair Trip Salon

Every year we create a marketplace at our shop that serves as a one stop shop for people who want to get unique, beautiful and thoughtful gifts for their friends and family for the holidays.
This year we will have food and drinks, live entertainment, and local vendors selling awesome gifts like clothing/apparel, artwork, jewelry, essential oils, salves, honeys, teas, health and wellness packages, wine, etc. and of course our boutique will be open with sales on all Colorado gear, hats, shirts, purses, totes, wine bottle bags, aprons, jewelry, gemstones, pins, and all natural health and beauty products!

So this year be a Holiday Hero and show your gift recipients how thoughtful you are, rather than buying generic gifts at the big stores or online, support local and have a good time doing it.

-Paul Zamora (My Hair Trip Salon)

This year, Afro Triangle will be joining them. I will be selling small drawings and paintings, original inks and stickers. It’s First Friday, so enjoy the Art Walk and stop on in.

New Opportunities

What’s Up

I mentioned earlier this morning that I had a meeting that I didn’t want to jinx. Well, now I can tell you about it! I met with a gentleman named Jason Janz who works with an organization called Upstream Impact.  This organization helps impoverished people and ex-cons turn their lives around.  Jason saw my Women Behaving Badly paintings the day after I hung them and called me up.

What he wants to do is commission a series of paintings on both national and local leaders with the intention of inspiring the people in the program. This year, 100 men and women will be coming through their doors. Because many of these people are of the Black and Latino communities, Jason wants to show leaders who represent them. He wants these folks to see themselves in the great men and women portrayed in the paintings.

How You Can Help

We are now in the research phase. If you are a local Denverite, and know something of this city’s history, I would love it if you could help me out. Shoot me the names of some Black, Latino and Native American leaders who have impacted this community and I will research and submit them for consideration. We are doing 10 paintings in all, five local leaders and five national leaders.

Once we are past the research phase, there will be a fundraiser in which I will include posters of my current series as well as our final choices as perks. These look great on bedroom walls and classroom walls.

Afro Triangle at Common Grounds

If you happen to be at Common Grounds Coffeehouse on Wazee this month, you may notice some art on the walls that looks a little familiar. That is because I have hung some of my pieces from the past year. If you have missed my last few shows and haven’t had a chance to see my work in person, now is a great time to check it out. I have a good mix of original pieces, as well as prints mounted on wooden boards.
My work is accompanied by that of three other talented artists: Keith Oelschlager, Sarah Paz Hyde and Zoe Hopkins. Our art will bean the walls for the remainder of May and all of June. Come the 9th of June, around the halfway point, and watch as I create a brand new painting before your eyes. Bring yourself, bring your friends, (bring your wallet), and let’s have a good time.
