Yesterday was my birthday so I took it easy. No long day trips, no crazy hikes, just a quest for good food in the area and some sketching by the sea.
When we first got to Huanchaco and went to the beach, I was struck by how many tiny fish were in the waves by the shore and how many bigger fish were leaping out of the water. That was the main thing I set out to capture. Of course, you know me. I had to put in the human element, so I also painted in some locals bathing in the water.
Now, I did use a ballpoint pen to block out the shapes, which is contrary to how I said I’d operate in the beginning, but in my defense, it’s really hard for me to start a sketch with the watercolor brush. Unless I focus, my early lines come out pretty thick and distract me for the rest of the drawing. That being said, I wanted to go back to using only watercolor and felt pens, so I fashioned this tool for myself so that I could “stick” to the rules.
I tested it out by sketching some inanimate objects in the courtyard of our hostel. Once again, all these people came in and this time they started messing with my stuff. I don’t know if they are a consequence of the pen or if they were in my head waiting to come out as soon as I had a tool I was comfortable with. We’ll see….
