Leymah Gbowee – Mixed Media Painting

$975.00

Who is she?

Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian Nobel Peace Prize winner who led a women’s peace movement that ended the second civil war in Liberia. Just after the war erupted, she did trauma counseling with the child soldiers produced by the fighting.

What did she do?

She joined an organization called Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) which focused only on women and only on building peace. Through that organization, she led peaceful protests to convince the president to hold peace talks. She and hundreds of other women then went to those talks between warning factions and put pressure on them to end the war. Through peaceful protests, the war was ended in 2003 and Leymah Gbowee won a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts.

Why does that matter?

Gbowee proved, not only the ability of peaceful protests to work in the most heinous of situations, but also the power that women can wield when organized and mobilized.
