If you find yourself traveling through Peru, you’re going to keep seeing this drink on menus and tables everywhere you go. The drink is this deep purple color with a light, lemony, spicy, almost familiar-but-not-quite flavor. It’s called the Chicha Morada and it’s Delicious! At least, that’s my humble opinion.
The purple color comes from corn (as in on the cob), Maiz Morada which is boiled in water for 45 minutes to an hour. An infusion of pineapple rinds, cinnamon, cloves, sugar and lime gives it that light, citrusy flavor that I am still not able to place but I swear reminds me of something.
In keeping with my mission to document my experiences here, I have a sketch of this tasty beverage. I did not have a reference in front of me, so forgive my lack of perspective. I hope you have enjoyed this post. If you want to try the Chicha Morada for yourself, come an down to Peru….or I suppose you could try making it with this recipe, it that’s too much of a hassle.
